Sheffield United League One fixtures released

FOR those who believe in omens, Sheffield United’s fixture list published this morning throws up an intriguing encounter on Sunday, May 8.

That date sees the final match of the season when Unitedites are hoping for a promotion party and to finally wave League One goodbye. The visitors are Scunthorpe, one of new manager Nigel Adkins’ former clubs and where he twice won promotion from the third tier of English football. It would be fitting for him to mark a fourth success – he also did it at Southampton – against the club where he cemented his managerial credentials.

The league programme kicks off at Gillingham on Saturday, August 8. Neighbours Chesterfield, the last league visitors to Bramall, will be the first of 2015-16 seven days later on August 15.

United travel to Swindon at the end of August, scene of their heart-breaking play-off semi-final exit in May. There are two home matches over the  Christmas period, an evening kick-off against  Bradford (December 28) and Peterborough (January 2). United are at Wigan on Boxing Day.

The return match with Chesterfield at the Proact Stadium is on Saturday, April 16. There are South Yorkshire derbies against Barnsley (away, November 28; home, April 23), Doncaster (home, September 26; away, February 13). United travel to West Yorkshire rivals Bradford on September 19.
